Two hours at Canyonlands: start with Island in the Sky

Canyonlands has separate districts. For a brief visit from Moab, Island in the Sky is the simplest starting point, with paved-road overlooks and short walks. Do not plan on hopping between districts in a short afternoon.

Choose your version of the day

The best plan depends on the time and effort you have. Use this comparison to make one clear choice, then check the official park pages before setting out.

PlanWhat it meansCheck first
About two hours in the districtThe NPS suggests Grand View Point, Green River Overlook, and the Mesa Arch loop.Leave additional time for the drive in and any delays.
Mesa ArchThe loop is about 0.6 mile. It is a walk to an overlook, not a walk on top of the arch.Check trail and weather conditions; stay back from exposed edges.
Longer visitAdd other overlooks or a longer trail only after accounting for the drive and remaining daylight.Download the park map and check road access.

Map the drive

NPS estimates roughly 40 minutes from Moab to the Island in the Sky Visitor Center and advises carrying a map rather than relying only on navigation apps.

Choose two overlooks

Grand View Point and Green River Overlook give different perspectives. Use them as anchors rather than rushing every pullout.

Add Mesa Arch if it fits

The short loop still takes time for walking and viewing. In heat or storms, choose an overlook instead.
