A short Arches visit: viewpoints, the Windows, or Delicate Arch?

Do not try to fit every famous arch into a brief visit. The Delicate Arch hike and a drive with short walks are different days. Choose by time, heat, parking, and the effort your group wants.

Choose your version of the day

The best plan depends on the time and effort you have. Use this comparison to make one clear choice, then check the official park pages before setting out.

PlanWhat it meansCheck first
Viewpoints firstDrive the paved park road with selected stops. The NPS suggests The Windows, Balanced Rock, and Delicate Arch Viewpoint for a short visit.Check current road access and allow for full lots.
Short walksThe Windows area and other trailheads offer closer views without committing to Delicate Arch.Read each trail description and current conditions.
Delicate Arch hikeThe up-close hike is 3 miles round trip with 480 feet of climbing, exposed slickrock, and little shade.Allow the hike its own block of time; check temperature and parking.

Before entering

Read the Arches planning and traffic pages. For 2026, NPS says advance timed-entry reservations are not required, but parking and entrance lines can still affect the day.

Choose one anchor

Pick a hike or a viewpoint route as the main plan. Add a second stop only if you have time and a safe weather window.

Prepare for desert travel

Carry water, sun protection, and a map. The park warns that popular trailhead lots can fill for hours; have another destination ready.
