Bryce Canyon: rim views or a hike below the hoodoos?

The Amphitheater can be rewarding from the rim without a long hike. If you want to walk among the hoodoos, plan for a descent and a climb back to the rim at high elevation.

Choose your version of the day

The best plan depends on the time and effort you have. Use this comparison to make one clear choice, then check the official park pages before setting out.

PlanWhat it meansCheck first
Short stopChoose one or two viewpoints such as Sunrise, Sunset, Bryce, or Inspiration Point.Check parking, shuttle operation, weather, and viewpoint access.
Gentler walkWalk the rim segment between Sunrise and Sunset Points, then turn around or continue only as conditions allow.Confirm the path condition and your return plan.
Below the rimThe Queen’s Garden and Navajo combination is a 2.9-mile loop with about 625 feet of elevation gain.Read the current trail page; sections can close seasonally or after weather.

Decide at the rim

Look into the Amphitheater before committing to a descent. Bryce’s elevation makes the climb back feel different from a flat 2.9 miles.

Pick the direction

The NPS recommends descending Queen’s Garden from Sunrise Point and climbing the Navajo side toward Sunset Point, then taking the rim path back. Confirm which side of Navajo is open.

Leave room for change

Carry water, use footwear suited to the surface, and turn a loop into viewpoints or a shorter walk if weather or energy changes.
