Choose the outing
The Vernal Fall footbridge is a natural first goal if you want a shorter walk with a view. Continuing toward the top adds steep stone steps and more exposure to spray and changing footing.
Use the National Park Service trail page for current distances and route choices. Allow time for the return climb and descent, not only the walk out.
Check the route that day
Trail work and seasonal conditions can change which route is open. Read Yosemite's current conditions before you set out, especially if you intend to go beyond the footbridge.
Water, loose rock, and steep steps can make footing slippery. Wear shoes with grip, carry water, and turn around when the trail no longer fits your group.
