Make a simple plan
- Look up the tide chart for Bar Island on the day you visit. Do not use yesterday's timing.
- The NPS describes a window of about 1.5 hours before to 1.5 hours after low tide for the exposed bar. Start early enough to return well within that window.
- Watch your footing on wet gravel and shoreline. Leave extra time for photos and the walk back.
If the bar is covered when you arrive, choose another coastal stop. Do not guess at a crossing time or depend on a general park forecast in place of the location's tide chart.
What the walk includes
The NPS lists the gravel bar and Bar Island Trail together as a 1.9-mile round trip. The crossing alone is about half a mile from Bar Harbor to the island. Beyond the bar, the trail climbs gradually through forest toward views of the harbor and Frenchman Bay. Budget time for the full return, not just the crossing.
Bridge Street in downtown Bar Harbor leads to the bar. Rocky, sandy, and gravel footing can slow the walk. If the tide window does not fit your day, Ocean Path is another coastal walk to consider; check its current conditions before leaving.
